Pettisville FFA hosted the county Public Speaking Contest on January 26th. 5 chapters brought members to participate in the different speaking contest. Pettisville provided 5 different memebers that each participated in a different field. Chrysta Beck and Trisha Cousino participated in the county creed-speaking contest. The girls learned the creed for their Greenhand Degree then competed against others students in the 9th grade Ag Science 1. After reciting the creed to two judges, the judges asked questions to the participants about how their life and the creed are related. Torin Blosser participated in the Extemporaneous contest. This requires members to pull a single topic out of three subcatagories, each with 4 possibilities, and choose one topic to present. The member then has 30 mins, and the 5 sources that they could bring, to prepare a four to six min. speach. The members then presented the speech to judges who followed up with questions. Nathan Spotts participated in the prepared speaking CDE. This entailed a 7-8 minute speech in front of a team of two judges. Nathan was required to have a prepared speech, on a topic by him, typed and sent in to the coordinators prior to the contest. Memorization of your speech highly encouraged. After giving the speech, the judges asks several questions on your topic. Brooke Betz participated at the beginning prepared speaking contest. Brooke prepared a topic about water pollution. The speech was optional and could be chosen by the student. The speech lasted 5-6 minutes long. Following the speech were questions from the judges. Overall the contest was a great experience, and helped prepare for public speaking. In the county Pettisville Chapter walked away with strong results. Torin Blosser earned a gold rating and placed 1st in extemporaneous speaking. Nathan Spotts, with a silver rating, placed 2nd in Prepared Speaking. Brooke Betz earned a gold rating and placed 4th in Beginning Prepared. Trisha Cousino, with a silver rating, placed 4th in Creed, while Chrysta Beck placed 4th with a silver rating. Torin, Nathan, and Trisha are going on to District Contest on February 14th.
