FFA Soil Judging Completed

Pettisville, OH - Pettisville Ag students prepared for the soil career development events (CDE) for several weeks. The Fulton County Soils CDE was held on September 17. Fifteen freshmen participated in the Urban-use contest, and two seniors, five juniors, and fourteen sophomores participated in the Rural-use soils contest.

For the Rural-use contest students evaluate the land on slope, erosion, texture, natural drainage, land classification and recommended conservation practices. In the Urban contest students evaluate the land on slope, flood hazard, soil stability, water table and bedrock depth.

FFA LogoThe top eight from each contest were selected and moved on to District 1 competition held in Anthony Wayne School District on September 30.

At the county contest, the urban soils team placed 5th overall as a team, and the rural soils team placed 2nd as a team. For an individual award, Tanner Hostetler tied for second high individual in the Rural contest. The district team members for urban soils were Josiah Hoops, Forest Stuckey, Chrysta Beck, Trisha Cousino, Troy King, Logan Nofziger. Greg Kempf, and Korben Rychener. Our top performers, with placing, were Trisha Cousino (3rd), Forest Stuckey (4th) and Troy King (9th). They placed 2nd in the district. Four of the eight went to the State CDE in Delaware County Oct 9th and placed 33rd.

The district team for Rural Soils was: Tanner Hostetler, Nathan Spotts, Dexter Aeschliman, Logan Beck, Alex Donnett, Aaron Bruner, Adi Bruner, and Taylor Kruse. The team placed 1st in the district with these 5 members in the top 12 places: Taylor Kruse (2nd), Nathan Spotts (3rd), Logan Beck (4th), Tanner Hostetler (6th), Dexter Aeschliman (12th). Four members went on to place 32nd at the state contest.

Also on September 30, four students participated in the Agronomy contest. Zach Pursel, Travis Beck, Nathan Betz and Arrin Short placed 12th in the district.
